Mahamastakabhisekha Information

Mahamastakabhisekha, the sacred head anointment of Lord Bahubali is the most important event of Sravanabelagola.  The ceremony commemorates the first consecratory bath, Pratishtha Abhisheka, peformed by Ganga Prime Minister Chavundaraya and his guru acharya.  It is held once in twelve years and signifies the Lord’s attainment of Kaival-yajnana (a higher plane of being) after 12 months of meditation.  Some also believe that it took 12 years to carve the monolith thus the ceremony is held, once I 12 years. Millions of devotees congregate here to witness and perform the sacred head anointment.
The last ceremony was held from February 8 to 19, 2006.
