Poompuhar Information

Poompuhar was once a major port of the Chola Empire.  The original city was submerged by the sea and at present only a small village exists.  This ancient city is also the birth place of th Taml epic Silappathikaram.  The ancient glory of this place has been revived by the Government of Tamil Nadu.  An art gallery depicting scenes from the Silappathikaram was opened in 1973.  Other monuments are the Nedumgal manram.  The Pavai mandram, the Elangi manram and the Kotrappandal.

Puhar, known to Ptolemy and Pliny, was a planned city built over 2000 year ago.  Excavations show an expert of planning that would make most modern planners envious.  An Archaeologists delight, Poompuhar is a town for those who like to wander amidst history and take a stroll through time.  For the more prosaic, a fine beach and calm waters offer good sea-bathing.

Poompuhar Festivals

On the new moon day, in the month of Adi and Thai and the full moon day in the month of Chithirai (April to may), large number of people gather here to take bath at the point where the River Cauvery flows into the bay of Bengal.  The Chithirai Full Moon festival is important.
